A couple who knew they were both HIV positive passed on the disease to their newborn child - and then left the child brain damaged after trying to cure him with cobra venom and lemon juice.
The shocking case of child abuse has emerged in Germany where the woman hid the fact she and her husband were infected when they realized their child had the disease.
Six years later, the couple have appeared in court charged with aggravated negligence after failing to tell doctors about the wife's HIV infection.
As a result, no precautions were taken during the cesarean birth and the child became infected with the disease either during the birth of from the breastfeeding afterwards.
Medics realized a few weeks later that the child was suffering from a HIV infection.
They confronted the parents - who admitted they knew but said they believed a faith healer who told them the child could not be infected while being born.
As the baby's condition worsened, however, they had then kidnapped the child from the hospital and took him to the faith healer.
They had found the healer on the internet and he told them he could cure HIV using cobra venom and lemon juice.
But instead the controversial treatment left the child brain damaged and in need of permanent care.
The child is now six years old and cared for in a home.
The 50-year-old man and his 37-year-old wife, who were not named, were charged by a court in Dusseldorf.
But only the man turned up and was given two years probation.
He told the court: "I blame my wife.
"She told me that the medical advice we had been given was that the boy could not be infected."
