Shaniwar Wada, built in 1746, was the seat of the Peshwa rulers of the Maratha Empire till 1818 when the Peshwas surrendered to the British. Although a major part of the fort was destroyed in 1828 by an unexplained fire, it is a popular tourists spot today.
Built by Baji Rao, the fort not just saw the rise and fall of Peshwas but its walls bear the evidence of a nerve chilling story of a 18-year-old boy's assassination.
The locals in Pune believe that the Fort is still haunted. According to an old story, this fort is haunted by Prince Narayanrao. He was assassinated brutally, when he was 18 by the order of one of his relatives. His assassins chased him all across the fort and the boy yelled again and again, "Kaka, mala vachva!" (Uncle, save me!) Even today locals say that they hear his cries for help at midnight on every new moon day.
